I've been asked exactly once. I didn't have one. They let me dive anyway.

I HAVE been asked on a number of occasions to show my logbook. Some places DO require it and if you can not produce one you will not be able to get on their dive boat! Their boat, their rules, their liability :idk: Cop an attitude .. it won't change a thing.. no log book, no proof of recent dives.... no diving.

I believe you if you say it happened to you...

But I'm just one more person who has never had that happen to me or heard of that happening to anyone that I know. So if there are still a few places that require that require that, and you plan on going, then that's one more reason to go digital.... I always have my phone with me and so I always have my dive log with me.

Now if you tell me that these same places won't accept a digital log, then they must be the only dive shop in their area. Because I'll bet that since it's 2014, one of their competitors will start accepting digital logs and there goes a lot of business!

People faking dive logs to do dives that they aren't qualified to do? I think that's an urban legend...

If you have a reason to log, then do so. Some people don't balance their checkbooks and trust the bank to be correct. Whatever floats.

As far as SB goes, you don't have to swim around the boat too many times before its clear who knows what they are talking about and who are douche bags. BTW, I'm in later group so don't trust anything I say.

I quit logging dives because whats the point? All I care about is weighting, and I only dive a couple of configurations. Number of dives is like comparing pecker sizes. I dont care if you've got 50 or 500 dives, I'll know in 5 minutes underwater how capable you are.

...you'll probably have them 90% sussed out by casually observing how they work their gear topside...

Reasons I do not log dives:
the book gets wet.
I don't like to keep track of something I have no use for.
After 100 logged dives it was not really useful.
after 500 dives it seems silly.
My computer keeps more info than I can possibly keep in a book.
I remember most of my sites pretty well, when I cant It is time to stop diving.
Weight? seriously, worked that out after about 10 dives.
what I have seen is either in a picture or in my mind again when I cant remember time to stop.
diving is not incremental, you do not learn +1 more things with +1 more dive and when you do learn something the Number is irrelevant.
I never kept track of lake dives so I have no idea the exact number anyway.
never ever been asked to show it.
my current dive watch shows over 300 hours underwater, last one has about the same. the one before that did not keep time but shows at least 100 dives, and they did not have computers in the 80s so no idea about those anyway.

Yup, when I show up with a rebreather and full tec gear, any log book questions usually go away. Only question I ever get is how deep I've dove. And when I answer, they just go away :)

I have been asked for the logbook, both in the red sea and both cancun and cozumel. Dont know if they would have accepted my computer though, as that could be anyones - but I guess so could the log book if you didnt bother filling in the name and adress part in the front of it.
Theres also no way of verifying my log book to be "true" as I dont tend to bring more than the latest one. If the book start at several hundred and theres only 3 dives actually in the book, what good does that do them to verify my dives? :p

Since I keep using the same op in the red sea they have my previous trip on file, so now its "when was your last dive before you came down here". Then again, Im planning my ninth trip there at the moment. Reminds me I have to see if theres any good deals going on for flights and hotel :)

More relevant for their liability would be "how deep are you CERTIFIED for"..
I do visit ops that want one of your c-cards in their file while youre stacking up the bill with extras to the prebooked though. Wonder how long thatll last now that its an option of getting digital c-cards :p

I keep a paper logbook, I download my dives, and I keep a spreadsheet. Why? Because I like to, it's my hobby. I have 785 dives and 724:41 bottom time. I have 480 EAN dives and 286 drift dives. I have only 11 dives deeper than 130 feet with a deepest of 153 feet. My coldest dive in a wetsuit was 47 degreees. My SRMV is 0.37 +/- 0.04 cu ft/min. Keep records or not, it's a personal decision, I've made mine. I've never been asked for my logbook, I did have to vouch for my experience prior to SDI Solo, they took me at my word.

I'm happy, good diving,

Craig

Yep it is an Ozzie liability thing. They will accept a digital log. The places I have had to show my log book have been in Queensland. They have a lot of regulations there and the dive ops are afraid of the consequences if they get caught breaking the rules. I guess there have been too many incidents with the number of divers that go there to dive the GBR.

I guess the devil is in the detail and it is always a good idea to check about any additional requirements when you book.

As far as indicating on SB my dive count. :idk: Doesn't seem an issue to me. People can say whatever they want about their dives and skill. I think in the end people will come to their own conclusions based on posting patterns anyway! IMHO the only sure way to know is to dive with a person or have the word from someone whose judgement you trust about their in water skills. I don't see the point of talking up or down my dive competence. I dive for my own enjoyment and to share the experience with my buddies not to impress someone I will likely never meet in person :)
