Me thinks that when the word mandatory is used in a title on SB the intention should be very clear. An operator requiring / making mandatory a locator is only mandatory for those that accept the terms and dive from his boat. When mandatory and all divers being made to carry one is used,; well there is only one place to go for all divers to be made to carry anything and it ain't the charter operators, it's the govt. There are no charter operators requiring me under the penalty of fines to tow a float and flag around, it's the state of RI. So it is not an unreasonable leap at all.

I don't do social media. Yes, I have bank accounts, but I also have "other" liquid assets that enable me to drop off the grid anytime I choose.

You chose the blue pill. That's fine, I don't have a problem with that. I chose the red pill.[/]

The point is, you're probably right about mass tracking, that's what the pill analogy represents. The source of contention we have is about the effectiveness of denying yourself a luxury in order "not to be tracked" (when we both believe you still are). Also, you're a moderator of a social media site. So you do do social media.

To me a cell phone is more of an annoyance than a luxury. If for some reason I find I need one, I buy a cheap prepaid disposable one.

Interesting, why do you think I'm a moderator of a social media site? If I am, I am not aware of it. Even if it were so, my true identity is concealed behind a web of false e-mail accounts. I don't even exist.

Oh, actually I'm wrong about you being a moderator. In tapatalk (it's a forum app for a cell phone) it showed moderator next to your name when I clicked it, but now I see it shows it by everyone's name. Must be an error or something. But you are a user of social media. Do you use VPNs to post on ScubaBoard?

I post on several various on-line forums under different names and e-mail addresses to conceal my identity.

Where is Statenville?

It's in Georgia. Small place. More power to you, but to me it seems like you are using a lot of energy for very little gain. Sort of like my opinion about the dive locator. Lots of energy and money down the drain. These things already exist. I'm an active diver and I only heard of one a few weeks ago (in a briefing telling me they no longer rent or stock them). If they exist and hardly anyone has them it could be because very few want them.

Huh? My quip was a play on the pinger being located over a dead body...
And mine was: you think it's a quip. It is actually literally how I want it.

FYI, one of my buddies donated eight Nautilus Lifelines to the dive boat that Tom was crewing on last month when he went missing on the Doria. Not a nanny state thing, just friends helping friends dive safely.

Renata's gift is one of the most generous and selfless gestures I have ever witnessed.

OK, at this point we are just hashing out semantics. As I always say, it's not a deposition, we don't need to parse the language of the OP that closely.

I was just saying that the OP's question could be discussed without necessarily assuming that he was talking about government laws. Again, I'm not saying that it's an unreasonable leap on your part, I totally understand where you are coming from and I actually agree with you.

I was just pointing out that the ONLY time that I have ever encountered anything mandatory in scuba diving, it has not been a government rule - it has been an operator rule. But I guess hydro testing is mandated by the DOT, so that would be the exception.

Yup! She's a class act, all the way.

She's off this week wasting time looking at wet rocks, but gonna try to drag her to Truk next year...

:D

Doc come on up to RI for a shore dive or two you can tow the govt mandated flag, then you can experience govt. help to the dive community up close and personal like. Plus we'd have a good time! :) Oh yeah, bring your locator thingmi I'll carry that.
