You aren't booked on the special trip Mike is running Jan 21-28th by chance are you? If so see you there! I'm going the Hawaii route to meet up with a couple old friends than hitting the Island Hopper and spending six days in Kosrae before Truk.
Why Yes, I will be on Mikes trip on the Odyssey. I look forward to meeting you. We have a group of 4 coming. I am currently fighting the urge to start packing!

I'm just trying to figure out how to fit everything. Got to take both my open water kit for Kosrae and CCR for Truk!

I'll be the skinny guy with the funny looking KISS rebreather.

I will be the fat bald guy trying to remember how to assemble a doubles kit

Any opinions on whether Truk Odyssey is "worth it" for a couple of experienced rec (not wreck) divers that don't go deeper than 100' (30m)? We don't want to be the people that slow everyone else up, or hold them back from doing the wreck they've been counting on....

Also...we would like to not walk, or even stand with our gear on if it can be avoided. On most LOBs we've been on, we gear up on the RIB and fall backwards. But apparently on the T.O. they do giant stride?

If you go on their website (Truk Lagoon Dive Sites. Wrecks Truk Odyssey visits in Truk Lagoon) you'll find the depths of the wrecks.

You wouldn’t necessarily be holding anyone back. It depends on how many groups go without a guide, how many are in your group, and if you want to penetrate the wrecks.

You generally put your gear on and walk down a set of steps. From there you can either giant stride or ride the elevator into the water.

Do divers generally go without a guide from the Odyssey? Pretty much all the rec diving we have done in SEA is with a guide.

Which is what I DON'T want to do.

Unless you're Tech Advanced Wreck Certified and choose to explore on your own, you should always dive with a guide.

Well, in that case have the deck crew haul your gear down the stairs to the platform and then sit & kit up there -fall in when you're ready to go. . .

Since all of the wrecks in Truk are in a lagoon, there's really no current. They moor on to a ball attached to the wreck, so generally speaking you're right above it, or very close to it. On the ones where the ship is moving they power it back over the wreck every few minutes.

You can explore the wreck on your own. You're not required to have a guide with you. If you're not going into the wreck it's nice to have a guide to point out things you might miss. If you're going into the wreck there are some that they tell you not to go into without a guide and some that have enough points of entry/exit that they just recommend having one.

They take your fins and put them on your feet once you get down to the platform. I'm sure if you asked them to carry your gear down to the platform and assist putting it on they would accommodate your request. It might be worth e-mailing them to make sure this is something they do. If they do, definitely remember that in the tip at the end of the trip.
I think for the sidemount divers I saw the crew carry one or both of the diver's cylinders to the platform for them to put on there or in the water. Same coming out. The singles and doubles divers put all of their kit on at the benches.

Are you physically unable to walk with your equipment or do you just like the special treatment (not sure how to ask that without coming off like a dick).

Neither. I have back problems, and although I can walk with the gear, I don't want to risk another episode of sicatica, or even worse, possible surgery. The last episode took me months to recover from.

I wish I would get a straight answer. If they don't want to do it, or its just not the thing to be done here, that's fine - we don't NEED to dive at Truk, although we would like to. An elevator really doesn't help?

If you want a straight answer contact them directly, (info@TrukOdyssey.com). I'm sure they'd be happy to answer all of your questions.
