There's one on eBay right now.

Looks funky. Guess I'll have to do some more googling to understand it better.

Why isn't it in production?

Why don't you ask your teacher that question the next time you take a SP regulator service class? I'd like to hear his answer.

This regulator was designed for extreme deep diving and in many ways is truly over-engineered. It's quite ingenious but there are lots of little finicky parts. The gist of the design is that air pressure provides an assist for opening the main valve in a very clever way. Also, the orientation of the diaphragm/exhaust valve minimizes case fault geometry. Once you get these things adjusted correctly, they are super stable in the water.

The converted pilots basically replace the finicky pilot valve with a center-balanced valve that eventually became the D400. There is VERY little drop-off in performance in return for a big increase in simplicity and ease-of-service. I've been using the converted pilot as my open water primary 2nd stage for a few years now and I love it.

Battle scars on a metal second stage give it character. Battle scars on a plastic second stage just make it uglier.

But you can clean up plastic face plates quite nicely with micro mesh. I've done a few and they look almost new again, until the next couple of dives that is...

I'll see your beautiful and flashy 109, and raise you a unique BA with satin finish, perforated cover, and G250 sized exhaust valve.
