Why would one need the ball?

you use the flat end....not the ball end.

most dead-blow hammers dont have metal faces otherwise.....and a rubber mallet wont reliably transfer the punch.

edit - I see that they specifically come with a metallic face, where other dead blow hammers may not.

a metal faced dead blow hammer (most commonly available is a ball peen in my experience)......a rock.....a big stick....your forehead.....pick one.

EDIT: I just did a quick search - I can't even find any dead-blow ball peens. I found one cross peen dead blow, but all the rest were double sledges.

i literally linked one in my first comment....and all you have to do is google search "dead blow ball peen" and you get like 4 million results.....regardless, ball peen or not, it doesnt matter.

you need a metal faced deadblow......what form that comes in, it doesnt make a difference......that is my recommendation, as someone who uses metal stamps on a near weekly basis.

Be sure to put them on the neck, and NOT on the straight part, the sidewall.

Keep in mind, a stamp is not much different than a pit.... a tank can be condemned for pits...

Causes the cylinder to be condemned at the next visual. NO marks on the side walls! You call it a stamp; but the inspector calls it a pit.

walls are thin stamping makes the tank not usable because of VIS standards for pits and gouges. a deep stamp can go 1/2 way through a steel tank side wall.

My instructor for my vis cert has a collection of tanks we had to go over. One had a guy's name stamped then hidden....
