He doesn't qualify at this point. Perhaps the requirement is a bit onerous since staying current seems to be an issue. In any event, telling him to be a part of the BOD when he obviously can't be is a bit disingenuous. You could admit to not having bupkis in that regard and he would stop asking you. It's common courtesy to answer a question or give an "I don't know".

I've come up with an instructor for a two day refresher in northern Florida. So I'm no longer looking for that. Still waiting on the CDS membership number though.

2 problems with this thinking. First, you have no idea how many cave divers are out there, neither do I, CDS is certainly not the only people teaching. Second, over the years it has been kinda established that a majority of cave divers last in the sport less than 7 years, most less than 5. Then they move on to something else, like a family or different career. Membership numbers vs number of cave divers is a bad comparison. Membership rates have fluctuated over the years.

It is member numbers vs number of active cave divers, not total cave divers. If the number of certified divers is going up by even 1% every year, then membership should be rising by the same. I'm not going to bother to dig through their tax records, but it should be a pretty simple question for someone like @karstdvr who is on several committees to say whether membership is rising or falling as a trend over the last 10 years. I'd be floored if membership is up by any appreciable number.

I do not care for that, frankly. You ask ME to be positive? Why don't YOU try that?

Respectfully, Tom has done little more than state facts. Productive conversation requires an open mind. He is explaining his view of the present situation.

considering you said nothing, I'll assume that you never actually had anything positive to say about it and were being combative.

I am not eligible for the BoD and do not foresee myself becoming eligible any time soon. I will continue to give money and time to the NFSA who is also doing workshops and conferences, but they are far more productive for the community as a whole than the CDS has been in a long time.

1. He can be a member if he pays. He is refusing because he says the org is trash. I am suggesting he pay, join the BOD, and change things. I think he has some good ideas too, but it is tiresome to only hear complaints and yet do nothing. tmassey could join too.
2. Common courtesy to answer a gotcha question, or one that is designed only to argue with you? Not interested. It is also common courtesy not to keep pressing if someone says No.
