Diver Death in Waterton National Park, Alberta on August 24, 2013

I can confirm that this was not an OOA emergency, however I agree with your general sentiment that in many cases worldwide the buddy system can be improved. Often new divers are so encompassed with themselves (buoyancy, trim, air, NDL) they lack the situational awareness to effectively monitor...

Diver Death in Waterton National Park, Alberta on August 24, 2013

It was a clear windy day in Waterton which resulted in some surface waves, but nothing out of the ordinary. The visibility was about 15-20 feet although the area where we found the weightbelt (where the incident took place) had a sandy bottom that could easily be stirred up. The temperature by...

Diver Death in Waterton National Park, Alberta on August 24, 2013

I have been following this thread closely and wondering if I should weigh in. I am the diver the original post referred to that went into the water to retrieve the deceased and was the one to initiate CPR on shore. In an effort to reduce the speculation and to ease curiosity I can confirm some...

Attention travelers, assistance needed. Help me select a location!

Thanks to all for all the replies. I think Bonaire will be my best option. Its nice to know you can always count on Scuba Board to get a wide variety of opinions and experience.

Attention travelers, assistance needed. Help me select a location!

Hi, I rarely post on these forms, (more of a reader than actual participant) but I thought this might be a good place to get some opinions. I am a NAUI Instructor and have a group of divers including a few OW and AOW students who want to leave our cold, murky Canadian waters to brave the...

    Scuba Trip to Grenada

Hello all, We recently took a group of our divers to Grenada staying at the True Blue Bay resort and dove with Aquanauts Grenada, the dive shop on the premises. We had a large group with a good mix of Basic Scuba diver students, Advanced Scuba diver students and Nitrox students. Aquanauts did...

Want to feel inadequate on SCUBA gear? Watch this ...

The filming even though on multiple days and multiple takes was also done via breath hold freediving. All in all a very cool video. Nery is the real deal in terms of ability and could do this dive as projected by the video, it just took mulitple days to get the right angles and shots for the...

    fusion footware

I like the fusion boot, you can attach it so the boot stays on the suit permanently. Reduces the hassle of putting the other boot on every dive, making sure the inner bag isn't bunched up ect. With the fusion boot, you install it once get it right and leave it. It works great.

    how to train breath holding?

Freedivers tend to train via 2 methods, O2 tables and CO2 tables. As you might suspect O2 tables helps your body adjust to hypoxic (low O2) conditions. CO2 Tables help with hypercapnic (high CO2) conditions. O2 Tables start with a 2 minute breathup followed by a short hold, the breath up...

    What equipment have you lost?

I have a wetsuit that is floating somewhere in the Bahamas. I was on Blackbeard's Cruise a while back and had my suit hanging on the railing with clips to let it dry between dives. Went to put it back on for the next dive and it was gone. Luckily I had a backup suit.

7mil in 70+ degree water? Is my instructor right?

Personally I would be really uncomfortable in a 7mm suit in 70F water. But then again I am used to wearing a 7mm suit in the 39-45F range and being a little cool, but not uncomfortably cold. If the conditions are really 70F a 5mm should do fine. If they are in the lower 60F then a 7mm could...

My OW is going to be cold

Coldest I've dove wet is 37 F, I wore a 2 piece 7mm john/jacket style wetsuit, hood and 3 finger mits. I was ok for about 20 minutes then started to get a little more cold. Total dive time was 26 minutes. Repetative dives in those conditions can make it worse. But if you get dry and get warm...

    Solo or not?

I've dove the breakwater many a time and in my opinion it is not as easy as a dive as you may think. First of all if you want to see a lot of the good stuff ie the wolf eels then you have to hoof your gear and weights a conciderable distance. That alone has been known to get people so...

1 Breath swim for NAUI DM swim test

Take it for what it is worth, but for me what works really well it forcing my mind not to think about what I am doing. I find if I focus on something else while I am swimming underwater on my breath hold and not focusing on the fact I am holding my breath, the time goes faster and it is much...

    Diving vs. Posting About Diving

What we need now is a way to get a 3G wireless connection underwater. That way we could post while diving and have the best of both worlds.

Summer water temps around Vancouver Is.?

West Coast water typically run in the mid 40's F for water temperature. I dove those temperatures at the west coast for years in a 7mm Farmer John and Jacket style wetsuit before I upgraded to my drysuit. On average I was fairly warm during the dives. I did notice I started to get chilled...

Trip Report - Blackbeards Cruise Feb 2010 With Video

Yes, one of the dives just off of Freeport is called the chamber. The DM told us it was a decompression chamber that fell off a boat during a storm a number of years ago. At some point a diver thought it would be funny to add a dummy inside the chamber.
