How long until you'd consider diving Japan's waters?

Given the half-life of the radioactive materials that have leaked into the water, a few years isn't going to change much in terms of radioactivity (with the exception of iodine-131 which is like 8 days half life). That being said I don't think diving in the water would be much of an issue...

Mt Gambier Australia Training trip - January 2011

When I get home I'll drop into the post-day review with my wife "honey, I'd like to go and spend some money learning some more diving stuff... so I can be dropped into holes and swim around underground". I wonder how she'll take it :D Cavern is on my list of things to do for sure. Being from...

    Views on underwater hunting

In Queensland, Australia we can't spear whilst on SCUBA. It's free-diving only. Not really phased either way but then again I've never seen what a pack of spearfishermen on SCUBA can do so I suppose it's never affected me in a huge way.

    Reimburse Good Samaritans?

This thread surprises me.. I'm not sure if it's a location thing but I don't think that myself nor any of my general diving companions would consider consider it a financial burden if having to use consumable products in a situation where they are required. Knowing you helped prevent a loss of...

15 litre versus 10 litre cylinder

The difference isn't huge with Fabers (the tanks I use). Only a 1.7lb swing difference. 12L Empty: -0.75 kg (-1.7 lbs) Full: -4.25 kg (-9.4 lbs) Swing: 3.50 kg (7.7 lbs) 15L Empty: -1.0 kg (-2.2 lbs) Full: -5.25 kg (-11.6 lbs) Swing: 4.25kg (9.4lb)

    Intova 4.7w narrow beam failed

After many glowing reviews of the Intova torches both the compact and the magnetic switch style, about 2 weeks ago I purchased one each of the narrow and wide 4.7w. On a very shallow dive yesterday (~10m/33ft) I had the narrow beam fail. I first noticed that the light wasn't as bright as...

    Using Air WAY to Fast

Still not enough imo.. you want to be FINISHING your safety stop with at least 50 bar (725psi for you American folk) especially as a novice diver. I'm guilty of getting back on board with 40 bar (580psi) and even that I wasn't happy with. You should always be a safe diver!

    85m air dive

That's exactly my point.. the **oxic label is there to define o2 levels and has nothing to do with how many different gasses are blended in the mix. I'm sure people use the term in the wrong context and "mean" something else but that doesn't make it right :D Comparing "trimix" to "normoxic"...

    85m air dive

I'm pretty new but my understanding is: hypoxic (less than 21% o2), normoxic (21% o2), and hyperoxic (greater than 21% o2) used to describe the oxygen levels in the gas? trimix (3 gas mix, generally nitrogen, oxygen and helium), heliox/heliair (helium + o2), nitrox (nitrogen + o2 in a...

    Which wetsuit in Fiji?

My opinion (being a tropical diver) is in that temp you could do with no wetsuit or if you really wanted to, a 3mm for a long repetitive dive week. I dive in our winter (water temp 19-20C which is what, 68F?) with a 5mm suit and I'm toasty warm with no hood.

    Got certified.Some SMALL questions

They don't teach decompression stops in OW because they are considered an emergency situation in the majority of recreational diving.. You shouldn't be planning to dive to depths/times that require them. As a OW diver and most CERTAINLY as a newly certified diver, you should be staying well...
