thanks for your replies & links, i didnt realize the mk v displaced so much, probably they reasoned the bigger the helmet the better.

what determines thickness of a helmet (mk v)

Hi there, since the pressure was balanced on the inside & outside of the helmet, why did it need to be made of such thick (therefore heavy) metal? any additional safety provided by the 'armor' protection of the helmet would be offset by its crushing weight,& huge buoyancy required to counter...

hookah vs USN Mk V helmet

Hello folks, i came across a WWII training video on how to don a Mk V, all 200 lbs of it. couldnt these helmets be made of much thinner metal as they are not holding out any pressure difference, just enough metal to keep it from flexing on each breath, equivilent to a hookah that you can talk...

zoop reads 0.0m at depth, but takes temperature ok

i put it in a 50-50% vineagar/water solution and after 30 minutes, from 0.0m it came to life, sort of. it started registering 80m depth and giving all sorts of warnings, finishing with the Er error to show the user is bent beyond whats in the computer tables. I pulled out the battery & cleared...

zoop reads 0.0m at depth, but takes temperature ok

Hi , my zoop remained displaying 0.0m depth during the dive today :( its the first time i used it this year. battery is 3 out of 4 bars (last year it was 4/4) . It gave an accurate temperature reading throughout though. does it need further cleaning, or is this indicative of a low...

do any of these brands still make housings? canon, fuji, olympus, panasonic, sony

i have been going over their websites, and i didnt find pages showing housings for their new cameras. it seems they are switching to tough cameras, leaving housing production to ikelite etc, and leaving an opportunity for chinese manufacturers like meikon to gain market. why have the big...

why arent there any wireless charging cameras?

Hi, I heard about cellphone wireless charging years ago, many models support it today. if added to a camera, you would be able to seal the case (with silicone caulk, instead of grease) and not open it again. wireless photo transfer is already common in cameras, but why are they keeping back...

which point & shoot would make a good part time underwater camera?

Hello folks, I would like to get a new point & shoot camera with an u/w case , I was going to buy the 2013 powershot 280sx from amazon for $200, as it has everything i need, including 20x optical & manual mode for close up photography or fast fish subjects, but i read in the nick of time...

Why aren't more people taking up scuba diving?

Why aren't more people taking up scuba diving? the answer is simple, they are taking up freediving instead. -its safer (no life support equipment needed, less points of failure, no bends or expansion risks) -as an extreme sport it has a higher cool factor -no heavy tank to break your back -less...

possible? 2nd stage failing & supplying air above ambient?

Oops! You are definitely right, apologies. That little flap makes it impossible for pressure inside the 2nd stage/mouthpiece to exceed ambient. Thanks

possible? 2nd stage failing & supplying air above ambient?

Wouldn't the exhaust would be held shut by air pressure during the fault? Wouldn't it be quite probable to suffer injury if your jaw muscles holding the reg are stronger than your lung tissues? The weakest link will give first

possible? 2nd stage failing & supplying air above ambient?

another scuba science question: in modern american/european branded regulators, is this type of failure possible? & would the reg shoot out of your mouth before any damage was done? thx b

    Are dry snorkels dangerous?

can i ask you why you are so sure? as it is pretty clear you never used one, nor attempted to read what i wrote beyond the thread title.

    Are dry snorkels dangerous?

i am not advocating dry snorkel use while freediving,& yes i have a j tube which i remove while down. when i first got interested in snorkling , my first snorkel was a dry model. the vacuum pull generated when a wave shut the valve mid breath was enough to leave you in discomfort. apart...

    Are dry snorkels dangerous?

If you've ever used a dry snorkel you will be familiar with the vacuum sensation when mid breath a wave closes the valve. My question is can it lead to negative static lung-loading Where blood plasma is drawn into the alveoli & you drown in your own plasma? Thanks

How did quick release belts become a safety standard?

In free/skin diving I can understand why you would want a belt that you could flick open with one finger in an instant, but how did the importance of quick release get into *scuba* agency manuals? Apart from the not insignificant chance of catching the latch on something yourself & opening it...

History behind Dive computer error mode

"also confuse the user, as it stands apparently people get confused between remaining NDL and ascent time, is having and extra 'in error but limping back to the surface but all bets are off' mode actually a help on average" Yes I think limited segment display on consumer dive computers...

History behind Dive computer error mode
