Unknown Dive Talk Accident Review with Gareth Lock

Thanks, wasn’t aware as don’t follow DT. DT’s caviler approach to just about everything makes that a bit concerning, if that’s the case. For example, Gus’s first trimix dive on his Sidewinder at Roaring River that could have ended in a fatality….but got blow off as no big deal. New or...

Unknown Dive Talk Accident Review with Gareth Lock

DiveTalk is just a social media blog for entertainment purposes. Nothing more, Nothing less. If you think otherwise, you are either sadly confused or mistaken. Everything DT posts is for entertainment and serves no training or educational purpose. Let's only acknowledge DT for the comic...

Unknown Woody From “Dive Talk” DCS and Medical Journey

Not sure how or why you made such a giant leap to post the above about my question. Wasn’t meant as any of that. It was DT that stated they would have a detailed follow up and release the transcripts. Was just wondering why they haven’t followed through on it, or if they still extend too...

Unknown Woody From “Dive Talk” DCS and Medical Journey

Any update from DiveTalk anywhere yet?!? As an ageing cave diver who travels frequently and has DAN insurance, would be interested to know any details. Thanks, in advance,

One dead at Cow Springs - Live Oak, FL

Yes, but how accurately or for how long with water wicking into the Fischer cable and potentially effecting mV readings? The only sure way would be to constantly Dil flush and verify pO2 reading which would be very task loading.

Cave diver drowns - Jackson Blue Springs, Florida

Agree 100%. I takes time to gain the necessary experience after training. He may have had been CCR cave certified, but still did not have the necessary experience. Making videos that say he most definitely did have enough experience to enter that tight side mount tunnel after being recently...

Cave diver drowns - Jackson Blue Springs, Florida

No one is that how long somebody’s been certified is the only thing that matters. How many, and how frequently also matter. Just saying it’s best to take it slow, gain some experience, and have a few recoverable issues; before advancing to more complicated dives, is all.

Cave diver drowns - Jackson Blue Springs, Florida

Same here. Too far too fast. Might be certified, but not experienced enough to be doing the dives some are doing right away after certification. Need to have a few “humbling” and learning experiences along the way. OC Cavern & Cave Into 2004 OC Apprentice: 2005 OC Trimix 2006 OC Cave 2007...

Virginian diver dead at 190 feet - Roaring River State Park, Missouri

Not to side-track the thread even further. But if I remember correctly, Brian Bugge’s accident/death occur during a CCR MOD II normoxic Trimix course. It might have even been a MOD III hypoxic Trimix course - not sure. But it wasn’t a MOD I CCR course. Even so, it certainly didn’t excuse the...

Virginian diver dead at 190 feet - Roaring River State Park, Missouri

I totally agree with you. Was just pointing out why some wreck divers might do it is all. Didn’t say I agree with it. As I said in my post “it’s not a good idea.” i.e: to use a deep BO with a pO2 above 1.4. I tend to keep on-board Dil at a pO2 at 1.0 ata and OC BO at 1.2 ata max. And of...

Virginian diver dead at 190 feet - Roaring River State Park, Missouri

Choosing a deep BO with a pO2 above 1.4 might be ok while wreck diving where the vis is good enough to be able to ascend a couple of ata’s and still see the wreck to get to the up line. But it’s not a good idea on low vis wrecks (like the Great Lakes) or in a cave where you might be at a high...

Virginian diver dead at 190 feet - Roaring River State Park, Missouri

I only use my Sidewinder for cave diving also. Use a dual MAV that’s fed Dil via a lp QD from left tank, and ADV fed via a QC6 from right tank (Dil redundancy). Wing fed off left tank, drysuit fed off right tank (buoyancy redundancy). For most caves in the 100-130 foot range, drop 100% Oxygen...

Virginian diver dead at 190 feet - Roaring River State Park, Missouri

I believe labeling is a bad idea. It’s best to treat QC6 gas exchanges just like a second stage gas switch. Trace the hose back to the regulator and check the MOD on the tank it’s connected too. Purge the QC6 with the tank valve closed to verify the SPG drops. But I am not a CCR Instructor so...

Virginian diver dead at 190 feet - Roaring River State Park, Missouri

Gus was using 16/40 in his left bailout bottle with a second stage on a bungee around his neck, and air in his right bailout bottle with a second stage on a 7’ hose. Mike Y. posted on FB that air was in the right bottle so it could be used for dry suit inflation and deco. I don't know what Gus'...

Virginian diver dead at 190 feet - Roaring River State Park, Missouri

I agree, safety bottles had nothing directly to do with the accident and just side track the root cause (i.e. taking a hot, non Helium Dil mix beyond it’s MOD). Was just trying to wrap my mind around what pre-dive planning or checks were in place for support dives. And wondered if knowing...

Virginian diver dead at 190 feet - Roaring River State Park, Missouri

The NSS-CDS accident report indicates the deceased dive computers were set to a close circuit gas of 24/00. However, it doesn’t go into any more detail about if, or what, any OC bailout gases were entered in the computers. It would be interesting to know if the staged bailout mixes were...
