    Money

I think it depends on your bank in Honduras. I don't own property, live on the mainland and opened a US dollar account with $300. Of course, I already had a lempira ccount at the same bank so that's why they probably allowed me to open with only $300.

    Microchipping pets in Honduras

We have had sporadic internet the past two weeks or so....it's the rainy season here on the mainland and the internet craps out almost every night. During the day, I was in school - finals week, recuperation examinations, report cards to do, all that good stuff. It ended last night when the high...

    Microchipping pets in Honduras

My vet doesn't do it. I live in Honduras. He doesn't even have a chip reader. I doubt any other vets have chip readers either. The tattoo is more readily visible but how will a Honduran know what the tattoo means? or who to contact if the animal is lost?

    Some notes on Lempira/Dollar exchange

I went to my bank today to change dollars to lempira (leftover cash from my recent El Salvador trip). The exchange rate at the bank (Banco de Occidente)for dollars to lempira was 16.95 Lempira to the dollar. The ATM machine was still doing 18.89 Lempira to the dollar on 15 May. Something to...

    Diving Instructor death - Roatan

do a search that way with the only information being the same story I read in the print edition of LaPrensa I get every morning. Knowing that many people on this board frequently go to the islands and several were in the islands on or about the time that this occured, I posted simply to inquire...

    Diving Instructor death - Roatan

No one knows if this was a dive accident or just an accident or anything else. The newspaper has yet to run a followup on it, if it ever will. It caught my eye in the paper under the title of Two Americans Die in Separate Incidents. When you are an American living outside the US you sometimes...

    Diving Instructor death - Roatan

Um...that's why I posted. I was trying to find out the same - diving accident or just an accident or something more sinister. I distrust the US media more than I distrust LaPrensa or El Heraldo. I never claimed it WAS a diving accident - just an accident with an unknown cause.

    Diving Instructor death - Roatan

The remainder of the article was about another American whose in-laws killed him because he was abusing his Honduran wife. I posted because I wanted to see if anyone had heard anything else or had more details on the incident. But - here's the entire article from the may 9th edition of...

    Diving Instructor death - Roatan

LaPrensa, Honduras had a small article about the death of a diving instructor. No details on whether or not it was diving related or not. It was two small paragraphs in an article reporting the death of two Americans in Honduras this week. It was reported on 9 May **** from Wisconsin...

    Roatan in December

the middle of the rainy season. We were there in December 2004 (same time frame as you are planning) and lost over half the days as far as diving went. We were on the north side though. The folks on the southside, where CCV is fared much better. It is more sheltered and when the seas are too...

    Roatan in May

He was in Copan before Roatan and was royally pissed off that LaPrensa was photgraphing him. After he left LaPrensa interviewed the hotel staff to find out what kind of SOB he really was - ni tipping the waitstaff, rude, etc.

Oil in Belize - any thoughts?

There's oil on the Honduran/Nicaraguan coast (including the Colombian terriroties off of nicaragua) as well as off of Cuba. The Honduran oil is both off shore and onshore - and the border debate with Nicaragua has heated up again. That came out last year in LaPrensa. Lula da Silva of Brazil has...

new to diving, 8 days in Utila, a slew of questions!

credit card for a cash advance at a machine or even inside the bank. The interest rates are insane. I will only use my debit card for direct withdrawals out of my checking and savings accounts at ATMs. I pay with cash only and use a credit card only when absolutely necessary. I feel if I don't...

new to diving, 8 days in Utila, a slew of questions!

MasterCard is becoming more and more accepted though. I've used mine quite a number of times - for vacations on Roatan, to buy computers and appliances, etc. Banco de Occidente issues MasterCard as their credit card.

Pit bull coming at me, owner screaming "Vicious NO"

IRRESPONSIBLE owners of un-neutered/unspayed dogs. I've had both for 20+ years with only two litters - both carefully planned. It's not hard to prevent unwanted litters - if the owner PAYS ATTENTION to their dogs and acts responsibly.

Pit bull coming at me, owner screaming "Vicious NO"

when they banned pit bulls, rotties, etc, the drug dealers went to Barbary Apes - a macaque monkey that has a NASTY personality. Thes animals have large canines and a very short temper. They can be triggered into an attack quite easily. No more dog fights either - the gangs went to monkey...

Pit bull coming at me, owner screaming "Vicious NO"

were enforced, you wouldn't be seeing all of those dogs chained in yards. Those problem dogs would be confiscated and their owners charged with neglect/cruelty as well as whatever other crimes they've committed.

Pit bull coming at me, owner screaming "Vicious NO"

and terriers have jaw structure that allows more psi tha the same size dog of another breed. In essence, they have strong jaws that can compress down to bite and crush animals. All terriers, not just pit bulls, have basically the same thing going with the jaws. All terriers were bred to be...

Pit bull coming at me, owner screaming "Vicious NO"

who treat their dogs like inanimate objects. Dogs need discipline but they also need love and companionship. Discipline doesn't mean isolating them in a yard with no human contact. They are pack animals and humans are their "pack". Isolation away from human family members can be major source of...
