I'm a big fan of the private DM route. If you are with experienced divers and/or avid photographers who stop to focus on things, it is amazingly easy to violate DjDiverDan's guideline #2 as you are learning to deal with the current. I say that as someone who learned the part about the current...
When you are prepping for the dive, ask the instructor what the dive plan is. The discovery dive should be relatively shallow. When I did mine, we ended up going to 58 feet, which, in retrospect, I think was high risk because I had no training.
I went snorkeling on a boat from Provo (T&C) in November. Perhaps because they said it was too rough to go out on the windward side, the snorkeling was really sad -- very little sea life. I entertained myself by practicing finning and relaxing in the water.
I've actually already had the hose to my octopus fail. It was on my fourth OW check out dive. It wasn't very dramatic -- it just started losing a steady stream of bubbles about an inch from the connection to the octopus. We were supposed to do an out-of-air scenario anyway. We declared that...
I'm still in the "not so long after OW" phase myself and this is the plan I've been going with. I've been vacation diving and hiring a private DM, which guarantees that I have an experienced buddy.
I do a post-dive review for myself to think about what might be good to focus on on upcoming...
Definitely read drrich2's trip report (link posted by him above) and his notes on trip planning research, which I have no idea how to link to here.
I was in Cozumel over Labor Day, stayed at Casa Mexicana, and dove with Blue XT Sea and was happy. I dove for three mornings and totally enjoyed...
We did the trip from Las Vegas to Moab and back. We had good hiking in Zion, Capitol Reef, and Arches. We were there in late May and got snowed on in Bryce. Grosvenor Arch was also pretty cool, although that was more of a drive up and look around stop. I would recommend skipping the...
I got my SSI Nitrox card in 2016. There were two levels. I did both and got the card that says up to 40%. As I recall, the second level boiled down to answering several more test questions.
I was in Vancouver in October. I have three non-diving suggestions:
1) Biking around Stanley Park was really cool
2) Bella Gelateria had excellent gelato
3) Edible Canada on Granville Island had an excellent brunch
Does anyone else equalize every 30 seconds or so while reading about equalizing? It is not that I need to equalize while sitting here at my computer, but the suggestion seems pretty powerful.
