Help me plan 2 weeks on East Coast of West Malaysia

We're going to Redang with Divers Den at the begining of April. We always have a fantastic time with them and I can't recommend them enough. Redang is a good bet if you enjoyed the diving in perhentians but not the islands themselves. The diving is still great but the island is much quieter (at...

    24 hours at Langkawi

Ah that's a shame, better luck next time. I've dived Langkawi island with Langkawi Scuba once and it was a very different experience to all the other diving I've done (reefs in clear-ish water) but was fun nonetheless and I'd say I would do the island again rather than go to the marine park just...

    Malaysia in April with family

We did a combo diving/Borneo trip in September last year. We spent 4 days 3 nights in Redang doing some diving then flew back to KL and on to Sandakan to go to the Orangutan sanctuary and Kinabatangan river for another 4 days 3 nights. The travel was really not too bad, yes you spend a day...

    24 hours at Langkawi

This is possibly too late for you but your best bet would be Langkawi Scuba (https://www.langkawi-scuba.com/). Langkawi Scuba dive around Langkawi island itself rather at Pulau Payar marine park. I don't think you'd find a dive shop that would take you out to Pulau Payar in the afternoon. Their...

Is there a technique to banging on a tank?

Hmm interesting, makes sense I guess as this was one of their first dives in the ocean after qualifying in fresh water. I hadn't thought that fresh water would be much quieter but you're probably right - the reef is noisy! I keep my pointer in my BCD pocket or in my hands (and not jabbed into...

Is there a technique to banging on a tank?

I have a metal pointer which I tried out for the first time on the trip I just took. Is there some technique for getting it to make a good sound on your tank? I went after a couple of friends who were swimming away from everyone else when the DM wanted to move on and was banging my tank pretty...

    Diving location suggestion

It's not clear how many dives you and your family have and how confident everyone is. If anyone is inexperienced or not confident some of the places mentioned could be a bit much. The currents in parts of Indonesia and Palau can be pretty strong for example. I love diving the east coast of...

Going to to Penang in late September

@Luko - nope, no reef sharks. We went nowhere near other snorkelers or divers though (advantage of the speed boat) so perhaps we'd have seen some if we'd been in the more populous area. I'd say it's definitely worth a day trip and now I don't have any more dive trips planned I'm tempted to...

Going to to Penang in late September

I'd agree with others that I think the only option for diving near-ish Penang is Pulau Payar / Langkawi. Penang Island itself doesn't have clear waters and although I'm sure there are dive sites (as there are on Langkawi Island) it seems like no-one in Penang has set up shop yet. Either way it...

Bali diving is better than I thought

I miss that seating area! Hopefully we'll see be back there soon.

Bali diving is better than I thought

Just got back from two days diving in Tulamben and it was fantastic! Such a great experience to have dives of that quality and variety along one stretch of shore. The staff at the resort we stayed at in Tulamben said tourism had suffered somewhat with the volcano/earthquakes however the dive...

What's the maximum no fly time?

Interesting discussion. This is just standard vacation diving, no square profiles or deco expected although I did forget that we've booked an enriched air course so we'll be using nitrox for the first time.

What's the maximum no fly time?

I think I'm going to make a note of no fly time in the future, it'd be good to have a rough idea what to expect it to be.

What's the maximum no fly time?

Thanks so much for the link, that's really helpful. I'll go ahead and book those flights and start the countdown to being back in the water!

What's the maximum no fly time?

I'm booking our next dive trip which will be two days / six dives with a max depth of 24m (80ft) and I realised I have no idea what kind of no fly time this trip will give us. We always leave at least 24 hours between last dive and flying out but could no fly time ever be more than that? I...

Buyin g a PLB in Malaysia

Oh I see, I didn't realise that was an issue. Try here: ACR ARTEXWhere to Buy | ACR ARTEX safety innovators (KL) or nav team (JB) look like the best bet.

Buyin g a PLB in Malaysia

There are a couple available on Lazada if you search "personal locator beacon". I haven't researched the brands though and you'd need to find a suitable waterproof case. Never seen one for sale in any shops here (not that I've really been looking).

    Skin problems when diving

Thanks guys. Yes, it's an acne like breakout. I don't think it's sea bathers eruption as it takes a few days to come on and isn't itchy or painful - just unsightly. Normally my skin is pretty clear. I do have a clay face mask that I like so perhaps I should take that and use it every evening I...

    Skin problems when diving

I don't think it's the suit because it's on my face and shoulders but no-where else. Shoulders are covered by the suit but it doesn't touch my face. I also only recently got a wetsuit - before that I'd dive in a rash vest and leggings.
