I am guessing that all of the other people in this thread are like me. I renewed my support, still have the box checked in my profile, and are now getting pop-ups. I believe that some scubaboard moderator or other staff member needs to click a button for us.

Strange. Had ads popping up on top of the page, which was annoying, but livable with. Now it stopped and I have done nothing.
I understand running this site costs money and if those ads can help I'm all for it.

Alas there’s new problems introduced with all the technology. GPS means incredible accuracy, meaning "traffic jams" at popular waypoints in the middle of nowhere. Fine until it’s foggy.

Technology is never a replacement for good core skills.

A ScubaBoard Staff Message...

Enough of this petty bickering

Play nice or go home

Actually..... the cost of running an internet forum is not epic. Based on the amount of ads that I see on SB, I'd say that this forum probably makes more money than they spend.. The moderators, like divemasters, are basically free labor on most forums. Plus, the owners and mods probably travel and dive for free on scourges and invasions. But that's all totally cool with me because I like the site and all that it has to offer.... :)

Depends how busy a forum is. ScubaBoard is by far and away the most successful diving forum in the world. Most forums struggle for a handful of posts per day — or even per month.

A lot of this is due to facebook taking over the world. Offering its blend of advertising with ephemeral postings with no searching nor categorisation.

Specialist forums are basically dying. It’s now harder to get accurate information and good debate.

Am I supposed to be seeing these ads as a forum contributor?
