I started receiving email notifications for all threads I participate in. Was my mistake but I have gone back to preferences and alert notifications and have unchecked all for email notifications. But I still get them. ??

You have to now turn them off for each thread individually.

To do this, and I had to do so a long, long time ago, when I got an email, I went to the thread. On the right, just above the first post, you'll see either "Unwatch Thread" or "Watch Thread". If you deselect it and then select it, it will copy your current preference. It will retain -that- preference until you unwatch and then watch it again.
Alternately, you can select not to receive site emails in your preferences.
