D.
Ambergris divers, I have used them and have nothing but good things to say about the operation.

Hi Donna;

I was there in March of this year...see my trip report if you wish: http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/belize/226220-caye-caulker-ambergris-caye-trip-report.html

To some degree it depends on where you are staying as, if you are quite far up north, some dive ops won't travel that far to pick up divers the cost of fuel being what it is. If you are relatively close to San Pedro there are several very good dive operators that don't run cattle boats and provide good personal service. I was very pleased with Pro-Tech and would use them again as I tend to seek dive ops that allow you to dive your computer, store your gear, have small groups and a good divemaster. Others that get high praise on this board (keep going through old posts) include: Ecologic, Chuck and Robbies, AquaDives and there are more. I would suggest narrowing it down to a few based on these posts and then emailing each with questions that are specific to the type of diving that you are looking for. Note that not all ops do the Blue Hole if that is on your hit list but will make arrangements with another dive op on your behalf. You will also find that many of the dive ops in San Pedro include full gear but will usually discount their prices if you provide your own. Enjoy the trip...there is some very good diving there.

Donna, Contact belizeisfun@btl.net ask for a current contact for " Happy Everett". Small op w/a couple of boats , can pick you up and store your gear.We dove w/him for a week and had him all to ourselves. If they can't help you ,PM me and I will find a contact for you.Regards, Bosco

Amigo's Del Mar was great when we stayed on Ambergris.

have to agree with ross and maureen

Where are you staying?

As of yesterday Protech is no longer operating, and I doubt it will ever again function as a regular dive center. Several of us will continue to offer specialised tuition (not just regular basic courses) under the Protech name but using the facilities of other operators. This tuition will be for PADI, IANTD and BSAC.

The Protech dive center has closed and all the used scuba gear has been sold off.

Note that we still have a large stock of new gear, so if anyone visits San Pedro and needs ANYTHING to do with scuba just call me on the local mobile number 620-1080. And we still have things like underwater cameras and scooters for rent. I will remain in San Pedro working in a quite different field (running my own accountancy practice), with the occasional foray into the water!

Sorry to disappoint our regulars, but you can't fight economics indefinitely.

I'm really dissapointed to hear this. We loved diving with Protech when visiting Ambergris. Is declining tourism the primary reason?

To an extent, yes. Too many operators chasing too few visitors, who now in particular are spending quite carefully, and sky-rocketing costs. If you're on a boat with fewer than four or five divers the operator is making a loss, at current prices. I would have liked to have raised prices considerably, say to US$50 per dive, but the market wouldn't have stood that. I know operators elsewhere in Belize who do charge that and more and their customers seem happy to pay it, but that wouldn't work here.

my family dove with Ecologic Divers last December - first class operation - located on the beach in San Pedro- they picked us up at the dock at the Xanadu Resort (2 bedroom condo about 10-15 minutes south of San Pedro was terrific as well as the staff- outstanding) - Marcos - one of their divemasters took two of us on a night dive to the HolChan cut that was just amazing (75 minute dive). Ecologic took care of all our equipment for the week
