The Florida State University recreational diving program suffered its second DCS incident in a year this past weekend, this time to a member of its leadership candidate group. Last year FSU had a student under supervision but probably underweighted suffer a pain-only incident while diving on a cetification dive in the Keys. No details on the latest incident except that the candidate was using gas with a 34% oxygen content.
Divers need to be aware that using "nitrox" is not a way to avoid decompression sickness; the diver may achieve longer no-stop bottom times but they are just as susceptible to things that can cause DCS to manifest such as rapid ascent rates, dehydration, excessive exercise, chilling of the diver, etc.
