The hills were not that steep but I was not changing gears right. I have it figured out now..

The best piece of advice I ever received about shifting was "shift before you have to".

yes sir...it works because maybe not too much pressure on the derailers? I got better. I kept looking for the clutch I guess!

How tough was that hill climb? Anything like the Hawthorne Blvd. grade up in Palos Verdes? (Absolute killer even for "la chica macha de infierno"!)

Honolulu does have several pretty tough hill climbs. In particular Tantalus Drive comes to mind. Seems like 5 miles up of never ending switchbacks but at least it is always in the shade.
