Of the four times I've been to Maui, we have stayed in Kihei all 4 times. When you look at the overall cost, we decided to go with condos...we can wash our clothes, eat breakfast and lunch (they way we like it) with the fridge and kitchen and then go out for dinner. I've stayed at the Kamaole Sands and Maui Banyan (both close to the Kihei Boat Ramp where the better dive ops launch from). I think we paid in the $150 range per night (booked through Orbitz in a pkg deal). Plus we were close to some great shore diving -- that also saved significant $$.

If you want a great escorted shore dive, go with ShakaDoug (on the board) of Shakadivers. We didn't need the escort, but decided to do the scooter dive out to St. Anthony's Wreck which was a blast for my son and I.

Check with Scuba Shack in Kihei. They have a two condos at Kamole Sands and a cottage. You can combine with dive packages and the rate are reasonable. They condos are two bedrooms though. The cottage might be a better choice for you.

Those look pretty high for prices... a suggestion: whenever possible book (hotels, cars, activites) as directly as possible -- there is a LOT of referral business on the island, with prices almost always cheaper when you go directly to the source.
The prices listed may be expensive...I didn't look before posting the site. I go to Maui every other year and last year I got a studio, ocean view for 8 nights-rental car (compact) inter island flights from Honolulu to Maui and back for two people for $1365.00.

......of course this was before I discovered ScubaBoard....sigh...back to researching for next year :)

Thanks for the additional info. I am going out of my mind trying to get everything done before to long.

Here is the info from Maui.net, it is thru Ed Robinson's and the cost is $70/night for 2 people. What the heck, you read it and see all the details, but it sounds good. I have been to Maui a few times but never used him. Always stayed at Kahana.

This is the one we stayed at, I took my whole family and rented 2 condos.
I found it on the hawaii4less.com site.

Delight in 7 nights at the Kahana Villa from $335*
Prices are per person based on a party of 4 and include:

Two bedroom ocean view condominium for 7 nights/8 days
Compact rental car for 1 week
The Kahana Villa is located in Kahana in beautiful northwest Maui. All two bedroom condos offer ocean views, full kitchens, washer/dryer and private lanais.

The biggest challenge you're going to have is finding a reasonably priced place available for Hawaii's SUPER HIGH season....Christmas. We've always found that everyone raises their prices for the 2 week winter vacation period, and are often booked 8-12 months in advance. Doesn't mean you won't find a good deal, just make sure to let us know if/when you do!! :)

Okay everybody- we have decided to take our trip earlier in the month. I really hate to pay extra just for the holiday season. I am cheap and can't see paying the prices. We live in Hawaii anyways, so it is not a bargain for us. We appreciate all the referrals and websites you all sent. Still waiting to hear back from a couple of dive operators (which will lose our business if they don't reply soon). We are going to Maui for a short trip then in February we are going to Kauai. Again, thanks for all the help.

sorry to jump in so late, but you might also check out Napili Shores http://www.outrigger.com/hotels_detail.aspx?hotel=26 they have decently priced rooms with full kitchen etc.. - and right on the beach - about 12 nice shore dive sites within 5 miles of the resort.

Aloha, Tim

We had friends go to Maui last Christmas and got one day of diving in out of 7....rained all the other days.....

It is a shame when folks come all the way over here and have bad weather... I had some friends that ended up doing about the same thing - 12 days on Maui with 2 dives... one was a refresher in 3ft surf, the other was a 15 min. dive to 18ft before they ran out of gas... oh well

High surf can definitely ruin a good day diving...Personally I don't even try diving when the surf gets much over 2ft...
