My snorkel bugs the crap out of me when I'm diving. Darn thing just always seems to be getting in my way. Does anybody here just leave it on the boat?

Howdy

Yup...bad as it sounds I just leave it at home. I fugure it may come in handy if the folks I vacation with want to snorkel sometime in the future.

Many divers don't even take one onto the boat in the first place. I'll let others debate the pros and cons, but you won't be alone if you decide to leave the snorkel at home.

I always dive with my snorkle just in case there's a long wait for the dive boat in rough seas.

It's neatly tucked away in my pocket. Right next to a Storm whistle and a signaling mirror.

Compromise: Get a snorkel that folds, and stow in pocket for use when needed.

I have started doing this with an Oceanic Pocket Snorkel.

I like not wearing, and I like having it handy if I need it.

Cheers,
Walter

I took mine off wants I started diving up here, havn't used in on a dive since; although, I do usually have it in the car. I'll grab it instead of the inflator hose when trying to dump air, so I know where you are comming from. I don't do boat dives, so all mine are shore dives and I swim on my back for surface swims.

Leave it on the boat unless the dive needs a long surface swim. The thing just gets in the way.

The snorkel is good in a place where you swim out to the dive, like the little cave in Florida's Crystal River. Don's rough water idea is also what I do. Besides that, the snorkel for scuba is a thing of the past. We used to take those 2250 psi. tanks and suck them fairly low. As there was no BC, we snorkeled back to the boat. That's not the modern way. It's good to have a snorkel and know how to use it, but I rarely take mine on a dive.
