Peak beach season, more people in the water, more chances for encounters and therefore attacks.
 
I heard here locally that the the guy was fishing out in waist deep water with his bait in his pockets........Not very smart, is it? Of course, he was a teenager, and whoever his adult guardian was is probably to blame.
 
If you survive the drive to and from the dive site, then you'll be ok, sharks or no. On the other hand, my dive shop has a Shark Shield for sale if anyone wants one...

I am thinking that the recent spread of the "red tide" in the gulf is forcing the sharks closer to shore for food.

Oh man.. if this hypothesis is correct then....

Man causes red tide from polluted run off into the ocean.
Sharks get pushed in shore due to red tide.
Man goes to the beach to splash in the water.
Sharks find a new food source.

I think that might even make a good modern Haiku. I have to work on that one.
