I will be on a cruise in August and will be at Nassau Bahamas and Kings Wharf Bermuda. My girlfriend, who will be newly certified will be on her first vacation dive so I was thinking of a beach dive. We will also be short on time in nassau so a boat is out. As far as Bermuda, we'd also like to have some time to tour around. Can anyone suggest a good but simple beach dive to take my girlfriend on at either location?
Thanks,
Justin

Hi Justin,

Neither of these islands are known for shore diving and I recommend again looking into the possibility of boat diving.

Bermuda does have limited shore diving along the south shore, but the sites I'm aware of are substantial swims.

I've dove New Providence a number of times and never heard of any shore diving.

Your best bet might be to contact Stuart Cove's http://www.stuartcove.com/ on New Providence and Blue Water Divers on Bermuda http://www.divebermuda.com/ and ask them directly.

Best of luck.

Thanks,
In bahamas, I have about a 4 hour window so its kinda tight for a boat. As far as Bermuda, I want to keep it shallow as she is new and a little nervous. I'll have to keep doing some research.

Stuart Coves in Nassau is great and they generally have a pickup service at the dock and take you back and forth. They also generally plan around cruise ship schedules. You are sort of limited but I would email them and see if they can help. Their dives are great.

Bermuda diving is all quite shallow (15-30 feet), with the exception of the Hermes (65 feet), so a boat dive is the way to go even for inexperienced divers. I would acutally recommend it over shore diving for new divers, as entrys can be difficult with waves and slippery rocks. Blue Water Divers in Somerset is a 10 minute taxi from Kings Warf. If you're stuck on shore diving, Blue Water Divers has an operation at Elbow Beach where you can rent tanks and other gear and do beach dives quite efficiently. Only downside is that it is 30 minutes each way from Kings Warf. But once there, you can do your dive(s), hang out on the beach, eat lunch at Mickey's (one of Bermuda's only beach side restaurants) then take a taxi back to Kings Warf.

There are shore diving sites in Bermuda - I've been on several and heard of more. However, one needs a knowledgable local diver as a guide. For any visitor without good connections in Bermuda, it's a dive boat.

After diving there a number of times, it certainly would be tempting to ditch the boat cost since a good many of the wrecks and good reefs are close to shore, but miss a site by 100 feet and you've got a lot of ocean ahead of you.

It seems I have found a single tank wreck/reef for bahamas (20-30 ft) and a morning 2 tank dive in Bermuda. So if she is cool with it, I plan on doing both. However, her comfort level will be making the decisions.
Thanks
