Alright, I'm a complete newbie. I've got a Canon A640 and the Canon housing for it. What cheapo flash do I buy, and how the heck does it work? I can't seem to find an Idiots Guide to strobes, and I have no clue what to look for. Can someone enlighten me with a link to some sacred site they used when they were new to learn what would work with their camera?

When you say cheapo what did you have in mind and what kinds of pictures do you want to take. Macro, fish portraits, reef scenes. That will matter quite a bit. You can get a starter kit for P&S for $160 or so from Optical Ocean Sales (Jack is on this board). It will be small and cheap but get you started. You will outgrow it quickly if you are serious about UW photos. Prices go up from there.
A more advanced system will cost at least $500 with sync cables and arms and all the bits you need.

I'm a cave diver...I know I can't fill the entire cave with light, just want something better than the on camera flash. I'm a college student and so cheap is great.

How the heck do external strobes work with my camera?
