I am looking for a new mask; I find most seem to put one in "blinkers". What do you guys think about those with side windows like the Tusa M-31? It looks like it becomes a high-volume mask, though. What do you like, & why?

Probably good for a lot of things, but not photography. For photography you generally want a black or very dark skirt, and low volume without "blinkers" to keep ambient light out.

??? so the 'blinkers' effect is a good thing?

I'm a little bothered because I lose visual on my dive buddy.

I bought the M-31 for the black skirt, but couldn't keep it from leaking (my problem with most of my masks) I didn't seem to have any issues with learning to turn my head to check for my buddy. (it was a learned skill though). I really wanted to love that mask though & I found the blinker effect worked great.......If I ever find a mask that doesn't leak I will buy 10 of them.......

Jax,
The problem with photographers is that they always loose sight of their buddies because we are concentrating on photos and not too much else. Sad but true. It takes a saint to be a good buddy to a photographer. My spouse has been my photo buddy for 20 years and I don't need to see her as she is three feet up, three feet back, right side. Always! As far as a mask goes get a low volume, black skirt, something with the glass close to your eyes.

Typical photographer's response: What buddy?

Kidding aside, your buddy should be positioning himself/herself so that you can easily keep tabs on the buddy's position. You shouldn't need side-view panels on your mask to do that. NWGratefulDiver's essay on the photographer's buddy is a great read.

I feel like the black-skirted masks generate less glare.
As you know, clear-skirted masks tend to yellow with age, and black-skirted masks don't have this problem.

Am a huge fan of the newer style, low volume, big glass designs...they work particularly well with lens (have one side for close up and one for distance in mine)... the Cressi Big eye evolution or the atomic subframe are great masks that don't leak on most people. The Mares liquid skin is a lovely mask that leaks on most people (including me)..

My shop handles Atomic, but Cressi masks fit so well, it is hard to change.
