Guys, I just want to let everyone know that a virus has spoofed my email addy. So if you get an email from LUBOLD8431@-----.com (took out domain, so I dont get spam) DO NOT OPEN THE ATTACHMENT!!!

A couple people have emailed me, and told me that I sent them something, which I did not. They were Scubaboard members, and I dont know how this happened. Just wanted to let people know that I am not sending these, and it is a virus...

BEWARE!!!!!!

Did you have them in your address book?

There's a new worm doing the rounds - "Netsky-D". Basically never open attachments unless it's something obvious like a .doc, .pdf, or .txt file, and GET ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE! There was an article a few days about how it is estimated probably 80% of spam email is being sent from home users' PCs without their knowledge - they get hijacked by hackers who basically sell spamming services - they use the backdoors left by these worms to gain access to a machine, and next thing you (don't) know your PC is firing off thousands of emails about Viagra, doodad enlargement and debt refinancing.

It's also safe to assume nowadays that if you get a virus email, the person who it looks like sent it probably didn't.

A similar thing happened to me about a month ago.

I was in Maui diving, my home computer and high speed microwave dish connection in California were totally powered down, but upon returning, my mailbox was full of "unable to deliver" and "your message had WORM_MIMAIL.R virus" auto mails.

It looks like somebody that got infected had me in their address book.

This is a pretty common phenomenon now a days. They don't have to be in YOUR address book... a spoof works by an infected computer masking itself as one of the user's in it's address book. That way it is much harder to track the infected PC... but if you read the header information that is inbedded into the e-mail you might be able to discern who it really came from. You can usually view the header info by right clicking on the offending e-mail and selecting "options" in Outlook and Outlook Express.

No, they were not in my address book.

Do you know what the e-mail was called (i.e., Subject)?

Yeah, it has a weird subject line that says :

^_^ meay-meay!

and the body says:

Argh, i don't like the plaintext :)

archive password: 67886

It's likely it's not in his address book. In his address book implies that he got the virus. The other very common thing is to spam a list, with a random member of the list being the 'sender'.

If they get the received lines on the e-mail, you can get an idea of where it came from. It's easy with some clients, some others you have to go into the properties and such like that.

My work e-mail gets dozens of bounced back spam and virus mailings a day, since I've on so many spam mail lists.

Oh... and yes; there's some new ones coming around. My norton actually kicked into the auto-update for the first time ever.
