bjpell and I came upon a freaky fish that was doing a good job of hiding itself under coral (i.e. not moving, refused to spook), and we're wondering just what it is called. (A few of my pier-fishing friends apparently called it a File or Tile fish, as that is what they have learned them as, but all the pictures (I have been able to find) of both don't seem correct). To bjpell's credit, he's the one who found this reclusive critter:

And, hey, if you're good at this, Ben might know what these are, but I would appreciate ID's on:

Sorry guys - I'm new to ID'ing.

Edit: I'm sure a locale will help - these shots were taken off of the second reef out just north of Fort Lauderdale, FL.

Thanks!

1. That's a Scrawled Filefish.
2. Looks like a Blennie of some sort from that angle but I'm not sure
3. Doctorfish or Surgeonfish
4. Christmastree worm

Rick

1) Scrawled Filefish
2) (I'll get back to this one)
3) Ocean Surgeonfish
4) Christmas Tree worm.

I'm going with rick on #2 - It looks like a blenny of sorts... how big was it? Do you have any other photos of it?

Wow - you all are really quick! Thanks a ton!

I feel better now that I can tell my pier fishing friends that that was, indeed, a filefish. Just doesn't look like the google images of filefish that we saw.

Y'uns guys are great, n'at.

There are several different filefish, your photo is pretty typical of a Scrawled Filefish.
