Hi there JohnnyGeeBass!

As gopbroek said, Cozumel is more of a favorite among experienced divers than Cancun is. That doesn’t mean Cancun lacks great dive sites. There is a small reef just offshore, and you can also explore MUSA, the underwater sculpture. You might get lucky and catch the end of bull shark season. It’s believed that the pregnant females arrive in the area in search of nursery for their young.

While you are going to be a bit early for whale sharks, you might consider taking a short trip to Isla Mujeres which has a couple of nice reefs.

Of course, you shouldn’t miss cenote diving. There are over 7,000 cenotes in Mexico, so it is difficult to recommend just one. Several are in the Cancun vicinity.

You might also like to take a look at our page about the Yucatan Peninsula where you will find weather averages, dive site reviews and operator pricing. Have a great trip!
