Coast Guard rescues man hurt in dive accident

BARNEGAT LIGHT — A man was flown by helicopter to a Philadelphia hospital on Sunday after being injured in a diving accident about 8 miles off the coast of Barnegat Light, Coast Guard officials said.

A crew member aboard the Dina Dee called for help for the man about 10:45 a.m., according to a Coast Guard news release.

Members of Coast Guard Station Barnegat Light responded in a 47-food motor lifeboat and took the man to a waiting first aid squad at the station, Coast Guard officials said. From there, he was airlifted to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in Philadelphia for further treatment.

The man's name was not released.

"Always paying attention to people around you and being able to recognize signs and symptoms of possible medical problems is very important," Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class Paul Zimmermann said in the news release. "Luckily we were nearby and able to assist in getting him to proper medical care."
