I have a mystery here – whether I have DCS or not….

On the 27th Sept, I dived to a max depth of 26.5 meters for 40 minutes with a Surface interval of 2 hours, then dived 19.5 meters for 25 minutes. Multi level so max time at deepest depth was 5 minutes.

When I came up after the first dive I had slight pains in the arms but dismissed my fears.

Next day, did 2 dives, again multi level, max 27 meters for 48 minutes, interval of 2 hours, then 20 meters for 51 mins. Again, had arm pain, but no other DCS symptom. The Divemaster said could not be DCS as the profiles were conservative, we did safety stops and we ascended very slowly.

Rested till 2 Oct then did an 18 meter dive for 42 mins, surface interval of 1 hour 15 mins then did 14 meters for 45 meters, both with stops at 5 meters. No problems afterwards. On 3 Oct did 25 meter dive for 35 minutes then experienced arm pain again so stopped diving.

The next day I went into a chamber for a US Navy Table 5. The arm pain did not go away, and I felt dizzy and nauseous.

Flew home 3 days later – no problems on the flight. Went to see a dive doctor in London, who was dubious at to whether it was DCS so prescribed rest and hydration. As I still complained of nausea and fatigue he put me in a chamber on 11 Oct for a Table 6 (4.5 hours). Still the symptoms have not gone – so he now thinks it cannot be DCS.

Nevertheless, I still have them – what could they be? After a full examination he does not know. Any thoughts or experience from your side much appreciated…..

first thought is to phone DAN right away, they are available 24/7

second i am wondering on your repetative dives did the pain go away while diving

Howdy cscartwright69:

Sorry to hear about your problem. You do indeed have mystery, but I doubt that you'll find a solution on an Internet message board. If I understand you correctly you have seen no less than two diving medicine specialists who presumably took medical histories and performed physical examinations, and you have had at least two trials of pressure in a chamber. Your current dive doctor does not feel that you have DCS. He certainly knows more about your situation than any of us could ever hope to!

The differential diagnosis (the list of things that can cause) arm pain, dizziness, and/or nausea is quite long. If your doctor does not know the cause after a full examination, then I fear we're not going to figure it out based on your brief summary of events. If your doctor has exhausted his resources and you still don't know what's going on, you might consider asking him for a referral to another doctor.

Sorry to not be of more help,

Bill

BTW, your divemaster's belief that one cannot get DCS after diving a conservative profile, doing safety stops, and ascending very slowly is incorrect. DCS might be less likely in that event, but not impossible.

Thanks both!

I guess I just wondered if anyone had seen this before - suspected DCS that then turned out to be X or Y....

Maybe the dizziness was oxgen toxicity and maybe the aches/pains are early rheumatism (i am 32).

anyhow, thanks for answering....
