....shower head style? Don't know that I've ever heard of those.

Yes, what's a showerhead style second stage? Link?

I think he means something like:

Those are have an upstream design that fail shut, meaning that if something in it breaks, it cuts off any gas supply. Where as, downstream designs fail open and just free-flow. I'd rather having a free-flowing second stage, in a failure, instead of no gas flow at all. What's the point of having the gas in your tanks if you don't have access to it?

He is referring to second stages like the Poseiden Jetstream, etc that look like hand held shower heads - the have the diaphragm on the side rather than the front.

They are not a true up stream design but rather have what amounts to an expanding sleave to control airflow so the fail closed issue is over stated. What is true is that in the event of a first stage Hp seat leak, they will still not vent excess pressure so an OPV needs to be integrated into the hose or added to one of the LP ports.

Here's what George had to say on pisiedens. This was back in 1996, so things could have changed-
Brendan - the reasons I said we don't use the posieden seconds (we do use
the
Odin first)not in any special order:

1 - proprietary hose fittings

2 - upstream valve

3 - requires pressure relief valve because of number 2

4 - hose come only in certain lengths, takes too long and too much to get
custom lengths

5 - reg fills with water when not is use , must be purged and cleared
before handing off to an out of air diver

6 - reg breaths water when scootering or in a current - must be taped to
work properly

7 - the little valve takes a set if left in the "minus" position

8 - can not be opened underwater to clear stuff out or fixed

9 - I walked into a gay bar one time by accident and everyone had one

10 - it is a sign of the techie stroke, like having one of those cheap
BMW's, or a girlfriend with fake **** - something only a storke would
do

11 - like I said, it is a piece of **** . However, the first stage is my
favorite all time reg, and I use them with G-250 or Beuchat VX 10, and
I
don't care about the ice nonsense - for those who can control their
regs
and their breathing , this is not a problem .

I do agree the hoses are hideously expensive due to the OPV incorporated into the inlet fitting. You can get slightly cheaper hoses without the OPV but then you need to add one on the first stage, and generally speaking hoses are much less common and can be hard to find in the lenghts you need.
