Mousy:
Hello,

I am planning to do my Rescue and Divemaster course/internship during the summer of 2004 (July and August). I am now searching for a good location to do this. Of importance are:

1. Good intructor/dive school
2. Good diving
3. Cost (I am still a student ) Not only the cost of the course is important but als the cost of living there for 2 months.
4. Nice surroundings (people etc.)

Anyone any advise??

Thank you in advance!

Hello. Why not try Pulau Perhentian in Malaysia? It is among the cheapest (if not the cheapest) place in Asia to dive and continue your education.

I know a friend who is starting up a dive shop there. They have been diving in Perhentian (and the rest of the world) many times over and pretty much agreed that Perhentian is best when it comes to diving and relaxation. If you dive with them up to divemaster, they probably can help you source a cheaper accommodation alternatives.

Check out www.alualudivers.com and send them an email. I am pretty sure they love to help.

Wishing you the best!

I've just sent my sister to do hers with SIDS in Samui for all the reasons you asked about.

Cheers

Did your sister think they were good?

i'd recommend Bubble07 on Malapascua Island as well. I'll be traveling there again and diving for a week in May. Trevor and Andrea are both experienced Instructors who have worked in Thailand and San Francisco. Duncan ownes the shop and is an instructor with technical dive experience as well.

Malapascua has a good variety of sites from coral reef, deep walls and some wrecks. White tip reef shark, coral shark and Thresher shark will usually be seen. I prefer the smaller critters like nudibranch, cuttle fish, seahorses, frog fish and mandarin fish.

There are some budget cottages for about $5 a day or $16 for one with fan, bath and breakfast (off the beach of course). If you are there for longer you should get a discounted rate from the usual tourist.

Have fun.

Koh Tao, Thailand.
I did my Rescue and DM course with Master Divers there - a small but very specialised company, better than the big commercial names like Easy Divers or Bans. My instructor was excellent and the people there know how to party as well as they know how to dive.
The prices are also very reasonable - you could get a good deal cut for Rescue and DM combined for around 20k baht - which is about £300(sterling). Cheap, but a very good service and the most fun I've ever had. Master Divers also have a secret wreck dive location their course director did some work on as a Tech Diver. They do trips there for a few of their DMs and Instructors - but only if you're good enough as it's a bit more challenging than the regular. The dive shop is located directly in front of you as you come off the main quay - ask for Jamie (their course director) and he'll sort you out, he's a great guy - tell him Scuba Hobbit sent you.
A lot of fun to be had there!

Well seems like Flora Bay is the favourite. I'm planning to go there in the middle of August with a bunch of non-diver friends (more or less like girls holiday outing) and am planning to encourage them to be a diver also.

Sym: I was in Koh Tao last month, marvellous place, nice friendly people and best dive sites! I was hooked up with Scuba Junction. A Finnish friend of mine recommend Scuba Junction and i trust her. Well..no regret at all. They are very very organised..And friendly too! They are doing a lot of courses from the very beginner up to Instructor course. Adam Berlin, very nice and entertaining instructor, James the groovy DiveMaster, Patrice the French intructor took us for a night dive at White Rock and we could watch Barracudas feeding thru our torches. And many more, all are experience peoples and they know their way around dive sites.

Good Luck and have fun!!

Yes there's quite a collection of interesting people on Koh Tao, anenome. I think it might be something to do with the small size of the island - do you think they all go a bit nuts after a while? Maybe it's something in the water...hmm...

You could always try to do it in form of an internship. It works out very cheap and great value for money. Check out www.learn-in-asia.com - there are several packages there that can all be tailored to suit your needs. The packages are all inclusive of accommodation etc.
