Los Angeles County authorities are investigating the death of a Huntington Beach diver whose body was discovered in the ocean off Palos Verdes on Sunday.
The name of the 52-year-old man, who was believed to have been diving near Malaga Cove, has not yet been released pending notification of family members.
Shortly after 8 p.m. Saturday, the man's friend phoned authorities to report that the diver had failed to meet at a scheduled time and location, U.S. Coast Guard officials said.
The diver's vehicle was discovered in a parking lot with no dive gear inside.
Rescuers immediately began searching for the man Saturday night. Rescue helicopters and boats from the Coast Guard, Los Angeles County Fire Department Baywatch-Redondo Beach, and the Redondo Beach Harbor Patrol searched an area covering more than 72 square miles of ocean, the Coast Guard said.
The Coast Guard's 87-foot Cutter Halibut also joined in the Saturday night search.
Authorities put the search on hold late Saturday but resumed in the early morning Sunday.
Lifeguards found the diver's body in the 300 block of Paseo Del Mar and reported it to the Los Angeles County Coroner's office around 10:30 a.m. Sunday, said coroner's assistant chief Ed Winter.
