(August 15, 2005) STARKEY A Fairport man apparently drowned while scuba diving in Seneca Lake just north of Glenora Point yesterday.
According to the Yates County Sheriff's Department, Eric G. Honsberger, 30, of Fairport was in about 16 feet of water attaching a new chain to a boat anchor when the accident occurred shortly before 11:30 a.m.
Honsberger's uncle, Charles Honsberger, who was assisting in a small boat, apparently told deputies that his nephew surfaced to clear seaweeds from his facemask and then dove back under the water. After Honsberger failed to resurface, his uncle dove into the water to find him without success, deputies said.
Charles Honsberger returned to shore and called 911. Divers from the Branchport Keuka Park Fire Department found Eric Honsberger in seaweed at the bottom of the lake, according the Sheriff's Department.
Eric Honsberger was transported to Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital in Penn Yan. He was pronounced dead shortly after 1 p.m.
The cause of the drowning is under investigation.
