"Police said it appeared he had been diving off the boat that caused his injuries."

Diver injured by boat off Wellington coast
A man was taken to hospital with serious leg injuries after a boating incident in Wellington on Saturday afternoon.

A police spokesman said the diver was about 600 metres offshore in Lyall Bay on Wellington's south coast when he was injured around 2.15pm.

He was taken ashore by boat to Queens Drive and treated by Wellington Free Ambulance officers after suffering lacerations to his leg.

"He couldn't get back to shore because of the injury and Westpac helicopter was called to assist. And then he was brought in a boat and taken back to the bay," the spokesman said.

"Further enquiries are being carried out to find out exactly what happened."

The man is being treated at Wellington Hospital.

Police said it appeared he had been diving off the boat that caused his injuries.

Maritime New Zealand is investigating the incident.
