I'd looking for some feedback on diving in Jamaica. I'm looking for a cheap vacation and saw some really cheap packges to Jamaica, but know nothing about the diving there. Thanks.

I don't recommend Jamaica as a dive desitination, but a search (http://www.scubaboard.com/search.php?) of our board archives reveals the following for you to read---->

I second Doc's opinion. Not much to see underwater in Jamaica. Its worth getting wet but barely.

I think that there is probably a reason that the packages are really cheap, they are to Jamaica. There are definitely better choices for dive vacations, Cozumel comes to mind as a higher value dive destination.

Jamaica is a nice place to stop on a cruise and see dunns river falls and a few other other things but not a place I would stay unless you like being asked to "buy some ganja maan" or worse. Not the most secure feeling in the world when I was there, felt like everyone hated you for being there. Cozumel,IMHO is a much better place, great diving (some of the best in world),great social life IE Carlos and charlies, etc and plenty of things to do and see when you no longer can dive due to flying. Anchiant Indian ruins within a day trip. All this in a place you feel more secure at than some areas of our major US cities.

Michael,
Friends of mine said exactly the same thing in reverse about safety in Jamaica vs. Mexico. They feel much better about Jamaica and that MX people were less friendly and seemed more annoyed with tourists.

I've never felt threatened in JM and have me many nice locals. We always try to go out to locally run places rather than the big restaraunts or stores. I always keep a big smile on my face and am very polite (but stern if needed) when dealing with locals. Always get great treatment.

Jamaica: Warned not to leave the resort without an escort. Security guard on the beach at night with a riot gun. Employee at the front gate also armed with a shotgun. Repeatedly asked to buy drugs from the minute we cleared customs to the minute we walked back into the airport. Really crappy diving.

Cozumel: None of that plus no crime and some of the best diving in the world.

Hmmmmm.. . .let me think.

Wow! I would feel the same way if that is what I experienced. Where did you stay?
