Never been there. Then again, I don't have expensive camera equipment I would bring.
A place I avoid for the past several years because this sort of thing, if you feel like warm water travel go to Bonaire or curaçao.

Why? If you're not exceeding the weight or dimensions limit, they have no reason to do anything, right?
Well known Mexican shake down. They claim you are a professional if the gear looks more than a ratty tourist level stuff. They do it because they can get away with it and it makes them money.

@lexvil I would. I have never been to the overseas parts of our country, so they would be top of my list as Caribbean destinations.

You should plan it, I prefer curaçao for more topside diversity but both offer great diving.

Any destination where temperatures are over 25C I just visit for the underwater world. I'm a cold-loving guy. Sun, beach, palm trees - they're what I would normally avoid. It's the diving that draws me. And history too. SO that's what I'll be focussing on, mainly.

But this is OK?

"Airport departure fees are assessed for international destinations at $51.74 USD."

I’ve never experienced extortion on either island, never paid an airport fee that wasn’t included in the ticket price.

Is there an airport anywhere that doesn’t charge a departure fee? (and all sorts of other fees and taxes.) It’s often rolled into the ticket price where you don’t see it, and in theory is what helps pays for the airport facilities you’re using. Way different than the Mexican shakedown nonsense.

I'd rather pay a departure tax that is 1. publicly spoken about 2. everyone pays either via airfare or some other payment method vs some random "authorities" shaking me down on the spot based upon what equipment I have and how that feel that correlates to my wealth.
