Info Bonaire - Telephone - Calling to and calling fromCellular Phone Service
GSM is supported on Bonaire at European frequencies. Roaming with some carriers, including Cingular and T-Mobile is possible as well and GPRS data services are available for roaming in some cases.
There are three cellular service provides on Bonaire: Telbo (the island phone company), MIO, and Digicel. Telbo and Digicel use GSM, and MIO uses CDMA technology. All three offer prepay phone usage programs.
Yes they do work. At least my Verizon phone did. I just needed to dial 001 and then the 10 digit phone number
Did you call the states from your Verizon phone on the island? What were the charges you experienced?
I think this kind of information can actually be valuable, so sharing my experience…
Service was not reliable at all, even as close to town as Andrea 2, where we had a flat tire. We tried calling the rental company from our Verizon (with global service plan) phones and also 3 different groups of people tried from whatever phones they had, nothing. Finally was able to call because someone that lived in the area let us use his WiFi from home.
So… all I can say is, whatever plan you have, even local, don’t bet your life or happiness on it. Heck, I’m in the massive city of Seattle right now and the guy next to me keeps having his calls drop — cell phones, meh.
