When my ears are working well, all I hear is a squeaking type noise. I find that if I descend in horizontal trim, my ears clear much more easily than feet first looking down. If they won't clear by moving your jaw, then pinch and swallow. Don't blow! It's too easy to get frustrated and force it.

I never pinch my nose. There are some small muscles somewhere in my neck/behind my ear/somewhere. If I tension those, even on the couch, I can hear sounds from the ear drums. This same method helps to equalize when needed. If it doesn't help, it's time to retreat a bit. I don't know how the equalization sounds. Stopped paying attention to it a long time ago. With time it becomes second nature.
