I learned the same trick as a new diver when my octo was eliminated . My self taught technique is to take a breath from my BC then exhale out of my nose . Your buoyancy control will keep continual fresh air and the BC will be the same as the second stage of your regulator . This survival skill is not mainstream and this diver sure is not either .
 
First, I would not team up with any diver who does not have the good sence to have an octo. Second, if a knuckle-head were to be in that situation anyway it would behoove him to initiate buddy breathing instead IMO...
