...maybe I got the question wrong, but, at least for me, it was never "fear" of removing my mask, it was the fact that every time I took it off I got a nose full of water and choked through my regulator underwater. I always swam as a kid and never had a problem with diving (from a diving board) and swimming underwater with my eyes open, etc. When I tried scuba, I couldn't do that mouth breathing thing that some people have down real well and always accidentally sucked water through my nose on the inhale until i got used to it.
