+1 for renting a DM to dive with if it is within your budget. Although I have found them more expensive in California then some other places since you are sometimes charged for a seat for them (but at an instructor rate which is less).
 
Good to hear the trip went so well. It's amazing the things you pick up in your first year. At times you think "Why wasn't that mentioned in the course"? But you're right--those "weekend" courses present the same amount of stuff as those that are more spread out. But it all comes at once and though not rocket science, it's a lot to absorb. Odd extra bits of info. do pop up here & there, but there just isn't time to cover a million (well not a million) things you will later pick up on. So, you dial in your buoyancy really well and pick up this and that info. on your own or from others diving or here on SB. Everything moves forward. Before you know it you're spending valuable time here discussing such vital topics as split fins, Spare Air and tables vs. computers.
