zeagle compact II w/octo+ alternate
xcel 5mm boots and neoprene socks
tusa imprex fins
uk sl4 and sl6 dive light.

they lasted me all of 20 odd dives.

nothing bad about the equipment. i just rushed it. couldn't resist having my own gear and haven't discovered scubaboard yet.

was my LDS to blame ? not really. didn't buy it from the shop where i took my classes from. i had done my research through dive magazines, both on-line as well as in hardcopy.

what i neglected to do was figure out what i want to eventually do with this new found hobby.

i am looking for my first gear setup too but since nobody heres dive until April i figure i will just wait before shelling out the $$$

WHat i am thinking of getting as first gear

1) SP 25/ 600/ SP octo

2) Oceanic Datamax Pro Plus

3) Zeagle Ranger or Halycon

4) Aeries Fins

5) Cressi Mask

6) Cressi Snorkle

7) lights

8) Camcorder casing (dont know which model yet)

i already have bunch of wetsuits from ebay :)

Here's my first setup:

SS Halcyon Backplate

Apeks TX50 primary reg
Apeks Tx40 backup reg
Halcyon ACB weights
Mares Quattro fins
Mares Opera mask (I think!)
Some worthless snorkel

55lb Halcon wing for doubles
Bare drysuit
AL FredT backplate
More TX50 regs!
2 LP104's
Halcyon manifold
Highland mills bands
Turtle fins w/ springs
HID cannister light

Now I'm sure your LDS sold the minumus as part of a package , or on the merrits of it's low profile, bright color.

Coyote, here is some food for thought.
Think about this from the recievers point of view.

If you were in an out of air and perhaps stressful situation, would you want to be looking for and depending on a low profile octopus, or would you want find a regular, familiar second stage.

My recommendation is to stick with a standard 2nd stage for your octopus, or use an Oceanic Omega (side exhaust) you can't present it upside down. (it doesn't have one).

If you'e DIR inclined, even better, put the back up on a necklace, and have your primary on an extra long hose.

Future Purchases

Coyote

Get the Suunto Cobra with Air integrated instead - it can measure rate of breathing, give you the number of minutes left on your tank, and adds calculations about nitrogen build-up based on work load (via rate of breathing).

I finally got all of my gear together and assembled, hope to try everything out in a pool before leaving for sunny Flo-ride-ah in a couple of weeks. It's really exciting to get new gear, but I don't think I can afford it but once every ten years or so!

I don't have a local dive shop (who wants to dive in ponds full of pig poo?) so everything's been sourced from the internet or on trips to FL.
