Freediver dead in Italy near Elba

Piombino, giovane sub in apnea muore tra la costa e l'Isola d'Elba: lo ritrovano gli amici - La Nazione - Livorno

A 28 year old free diver was found dead in approx 20 meters of water.
Freediving with friends he was taking some pictures, not really clear if he was the only one freediving or not. His friends alerted police when they didn't see him "come back" (up?).

I used to spend my summer vacations at Isola D'Elba when I was a kid. According to the article the free diver got sick. It does not surprise me that despite the fact he was diving with friends there was nobody around when he began to have difficulties. I guess for free divers the buddy system doesn't apply or does it?
