I live pretty close to my local site (5 mins) would putting on my drysuit then driving there be overkill ? I won’t need to worry about over heating only in the summer.

Whatever is most convenient. In winter I gear up at home in my 7 mil farmer john wetsuit, including pouch weight belt and drive a few blocks to the site, then drive back (plastic covers drivers seat), and change in the house. Only thing that's impractical is seat belt use. In the summer I do it all at the site. Nice & warm and I'm in no rush. But I can see that in winter you would be warm by not changing outside at a site.
How cold does the air temp. get in your area in winter?

Dude, in the early morning in the middle of winter, I'm driving up and down the coast
bootees, wetsuit farmer john on, wearing a coat, the heater on full blast ready to dive!

To build up my core temperature.
