West palm beach is also another good spot for beginner divers I dont know how deep you want to take him but I did a few dives down there and they were around 60ft.

Yes, the Breakers Reef is in 55' and is 2 miles long. Just south is Horseshoe and Paul's Reef in 50' of depth...

Key Largo is great. Stick to the shallower dives like Molassases Reef and leave the deeper dives and wrecks until your son has 30+ dives under his belt. Also morning dives are generally easier than afternoon dives due to less wind chop on the surface. Have fun.

Blue Springs in Volusia County is a good dive especially being so close. You can also check out Devil's Den and Blue Grotto. All of those dives are springs and unique. Blue Grotto is technically a cavern dive if you decide to go past the 60ish ft mark. Devils Den is a lot of fun and fairly shallow.

For ocean diving, Blue Heron like everyone else has said is a lot of fun.

There is also a lot of shore diving in the Ft. Lauderdale area that could suit beginners depth-wise, although more swimming is involved than a boat dive.
