Hello everyone. I've wanted to learn to dive for years and finally decided it was time. The funny thing is I know the exact chain of events that led to me doing more than musing about the whole thing. My brother and I have a big piece of property so far up in Maine that the only time we use it is Columbus Day week for a legendary camping/party that attracts as few as 12 but as many as 40 hardy souls for debauchery. This year, instead of my Moss tent, I opted for the Bibler single wall, and found it to be, well, smelly. Upon return to Mass and after a call to Bibler, they suggested I use Mirazyme to combat the aroma. Well the search for this elixer led me to a dive shop and I was rehooked. The first day at North Atlantic Scuba I met Jeff, the proprieter, and confessed to my desire. He signed me up for a PADI course that starts in January, and I left (with my mirazyme), feeling good about my decision. Life is too short to keep putting off stuff you want to do. Really. Unfortunately, I am, like many of you, unable to control my need to aquire new stuff. I tried to fight it, but after surfing all the scuba sites I got myself into an aquisition lather. I wanted it all. Scubapro, Atomic, Apeks, SeaQuest, Suunto, Uwatec, Apollo, blah, blah, blah, ad infinitum. When I returned to NAS to get a real look at some of the stuff I had been oogling online, the temtation was too great. I went from casual observer to active purchaser in about 15 minutes. Trust me, I was not coerced, I did this to myself. So, as this is my first post, I'll tell you what I bought and let the critical observations fly. SeaQuest Pro Unliited XXL as I am a large monkey, Suunto Cobra w/ compass, QD and cable, Mythos mask, Hyperstretch 7mm with hood vest thingy, Apeks Black Pearl (2 actually, I still don't know why, one for Sunday?), v-tek fins, deep see gloves and boots, no tanks, Aqualung integrated air supply, etc etc. I have a unhealthy desire to buy a D19 but will probably wait until I've been in the water at least once. This is quite a leap of faith considering I've never taken breath one under water but in my heart I know I'm going to love it. Even if I only inspect the anchor chain and clean the waterline on the sailboat I'll be ahead of the game in 2 years. I really didn't want to chime in until I had something useful to add, but I'm under the influence of Bombay this evening and I feel extra interesting, which will probably end by the morning. Anyway, greeting to all of you, and let me know if I've made any glaring omissions or bad decisions. Mark

Howdy!

And welcome to SB - the biggest, the best, the fastest growing, and :D the friendliest!
If you'll click ScubaBoard.com above, you'll be taken to our long list of forums, a wealth of information and resources. At the bottom, be sure to notice the Local & Singles Dive Club forums.

Sounds like you've had fun shopping. No criticisms here. Good start. Just maybe - stick a paragraph in your posts now and then. :lol2:

It would help in future diving discussions if you'd complete your Profile with location - and separately - your Dive Info. You can use the Quick Links in the bar above for such changes. And sizing a photo for your profile or Avatar can be a challenge; I'm a fumbling amateur, but I get the job done, if you'd like any help?

PM me if I can help you learn your way around; that is - click my username to the upper left, then follow the prompts to send me a "Personal Message." :thumb:

WELCOME to ScubaBoard!!!
Mark !! Thanks for a great post, and if the Bombay had anything to do with it, "Thank you Dr. Bombay"! (Do you suppose that was the origin of the name for that particular warlock?)
I've just had a long run of reading posts and was ready for a break, and you gave it to me without my having to leave my monitor.
Oh, and you made me feel very good about myself, fellow acquisitor! (couldn't find it {acquisitor} in my cheesy dictionary, but the word deserves a life!)
Very happy to have you with us!

STOCK MESSAGE
Hmm. Maybe.
This is a great place to meet people, talk about diving, and get information on just about any aspect of diving -or other subjects sometimes- that you can think of. Roaming through the forums is great help for me.
Now get wet with us and dive into the forums to ask questions, answer those that you can and even chat with folks about diving dreams and nightmares. ScubaBoard is a great place to spend your required Surface Intervals.
Again, Welcome to the greatest addiction!
It's so easy to forget the things that we love, but here at ScubaBoard, we're all doing our dead level best to maintain the highest level of SCUBA ADDICTION possible.
Please stay with us, interact, and keep your need to get wet alive!
When you post a question, be as sure as you can that it's in the right forum or you'll probably find it moved to where it can receive better attention.
The folks here are passionate about their diving, some about their specialty, so the reading can get very interesting, sometimes very hot.
Don't forget, if you haven't already done it, to fill out you profile as completely as reasonable, it'll save you being asked and having to repeat the information often.
Merry Christmas!

No experience needed and it feels great!

Hi Mark,

Check out the New England Lobstah Divers forum here. We've got a lot of active divers in the area, and you'll find out a lot about local sites, buddies, etc.

Matt

Mark,
Welcome to the board. I have a lot of the stuff that you purchased and you did very well. Not a fan of integrated octo but that is personal preferance a lot of people like them a lot. Good luck and have fun with your class.

Hey Mark!

For those of us who like to shop for and buy gadjets and gear, SCUBA is a second-to-none activity :) Glad you had so much fun shopping!

I think you really will like it once you do it. I had a blast in cert classes, and I hope you do too.

Welcome to scubbaoard! :D
