In the midst of all the Garibaldis and Sheepheads on Catalina was this red fish with blue spots....what fish is it?

looks like a juvenile garibaldi

Without a doubt. Conventional wisdom is that the juvenile coloration prevents adults from harrassing the juvies. However, decades of observation by yours truly suggests it isn't much of a deterent!
