Entirely depends on what you want in terms of nightlife and where you will be diving out of (traffic is really brutal).
If you are diving off Miami Beach (RJ Dive) then staying on the beach makes sense, more $$$ but convenient, or if you really want the crazy nightlife. If you are diving Key Largo or Broward / West Palm, different story.

We leave for a cruise on Sunday so probably no diving for me on Saturday.
Priceline has treated me well with Miami hotels in the past. A couple years ago I got a 5 star on Miami Beach for like $60 a night or something absurdly low. With the current economy, you might do even better! Give it a shot...
If you are leaving on a cruise from Miami, the Intercontinental would be your best choice. You are a one minute cab ride from the dock (you windows look down on the cruise ships), and you can walk to Bayside for shopping and restaurants. A very nice hotel, but not super cheap, although with the down economy, deals might be available.
