I quit trying to fly tanks around. I bring a set of the Dive Rite travel stage rigging and just ask for an extra Al80 that I'll pay for if I use it. Obviously you have to have the ability to sling it.

and just ask for an extra Al80
My pony is a lot of trouble plus the 9 pounds or so it weighs climbing it up a ladder or passing it to a crew member, but an extra 80 would be an extra 32-36 pounds.

Most Dive ops I choose for vacation offer a Stage if you ask. Either a CF 40 or 50. If they don't then like @JohnnyC I carry a travel sling and throw on an 80. Easy stuff

JD- My diving is mostly around the pacific. It is very rare to do a dive that isn't a guided tour with a DM or instructor watching out for you. (NZ is the exception). Its very rare for you to be "tossed in" just with an instabudy. You will find on deeper dives or more challenging dives the boat has an AL80 with regs slung under it at safety stop depth (5-6m 15-20 feet) Viz is also generally very good 60 feet being the norm but 100 feet being not unusual.

I have been bringing my pony, with the valve out for years, in carry on. Does anyone know if that has changed?
As of a year ago, no change. Has something happened recently that made you question this? I have a trip in March where I will be traveling with a 13 cf.

I occasionally carry a 19cf. I solo dive. I have a small fill whip. I put the valve back on after the flight and fill the pony from a resort tank.

I have gone to considerable effort to reduce the weight of my equipment for travel and other practical purposes thus the additional weight of the pony is painful but does not put me over the limits.
