I agree, those things have pretty limited use, and I have no need for a backup air source that small for scuba. We did use a similar device (HABD) as part of the crew kit (located in the survival vest) in rescue helicopters. It gave you a few breaths to deal with getting out of the helo as it rolled over and sank. It had a short hose and a downstream second stage. Had tons of fun training to use the thing in a ditching simulator which hit the water, rolled over and filled with water as you made your way out of the simulator blindfolded. Come to think of it, maybe it wasn't so much fun after all!
